Lannaman wins Bigga/JISA Prep School Football league

Lanaman won their fourth title in two years when they beat Vaz 1-0 yesterday (Tuesday, December 8) to lift the Bigga/JISA Prep School Football competition – Alberga Cup league title.

The Nigel Webb-coached team, who earlier won the Henriques Cup knockout title, was crowning themselves double champions for the second straight year. Webb, who said this means a lot for the school, also believes it wasn’t one of their best games.

“The boys were a bit nervous but the most important thing is that they won the game,” he said. He said if there was one positive to take from the game it would be the braveness of his boys to keep the ball on the ground. This is what we need in Jamaica, for players to keep the ball on the ground,” he said.

In the fast pace game, Rivaldo English’s 19th minute strike was the only goal in the match played at the Mona Bowl. Lannaman had few shots on goal in the dying moments, but Vaz’s goalkeeper was forced to make three point blank saves.

Vaz, at the other end, built some attacks for themselves, but the Lannaman goalkeeper was never tested during this period. Wolde Harris, a former national player, who is the coach of Vaz, said it was a difficult game to lose. “We played well all season, this is our second loss,” he pointed out while adding “the first half we did not played that well … we were kicking the ball, kicking the ball, second half we made a few changes tactically and we put the ball on the ground, got some good attacks, but we did not get the shots on goal.

Third place went to Hydel who defeated Wolmer’s 2-0 in their match played earlier in the day.

Karen Rosen, group-marketing manager at sponsor Wisynco, was pleased with the season and promised her company’s support for next season. We see in this as a great opportunity to contribute to our youths,” she said.

At the brief presentation held after the final, Lannaman also walked away with the KO trophy while Trafalgar took the most Improved team award.
