JFLAG says it supports Buju Banton’s right to be defended

Florida based attorney- at- law, Professor David Rowe says speculation that the arrest of Reggae Artiste Buju Banton in the United States is linked to his anti-gay lyrics is unfounded and has no merit.
Buju Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie is to appear in a Florida based Federal court today after he and two other men were caught on camera handling cocaine.
Professor Rowe says there is nothing in the affidavit to suggest a conspiracy against the reggae artiste.
According to the affidavit, Buju Banton is charged jointly with Ian Thomas and James Mack for knowingly and willfully conspiring to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms of cocaine.
The events leading up to his arrest were captured on audio and video recordings by undercover drug enforcement agents.
The Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals and Gays (J-FLAG) said it is concerned about suggestions that Buju Banton may have been victimized by members of the gay community.
The group says stories which are framed against the background of gay organization’s protests against him, provide the clear basis for insinuating that Buju Banton’s arrest could in some way be linked to the international gay community.
It said such a link is not only false but irresponsible.
JFLAG says it supports the artiste’s right to be defended and believes that he is innocent of the drug charge until proven guilty.
