Overloading may have caused American Airlines Boeing 737 crash in Jamaica

American Airlines Boeing 737 crash in Jamaica

Reports have surfaced that overloading may have contributed to last week’s crash of an American Airlines plane in which scores of passengers were injured.

Investigators are also trying to determine why the pilot flew over nearly half of the runway before setting the wheels down, leaving significantly less distance to bring the jet to a stop.

An affiliate of the NBC news in Dallas Texas says the Boeing 737 had exceeded its weight limit and this could have made it difficult for the pilot to properly land the aircraft.

It quoted US sources familiar with the investigations as saying that the plane was carrying extra fuel for the return trip to Miami, a practice known as ferrying fuel.

They say the weight of the extra fuel may have made the plane harder to stop.

More information on the cause of the crash of flight 331 is expected tomorrow when the team from the US National Transportation Safety Board presents a field report to Jamaica’s Civil Aviation Authority.

However, the agency says the findings will not be made public until the investigation is completed.
