4th MILO Western Champs launched

The fourth staging of MILO Western Champs was launched yesterday (Wednesday, February 10) at the Manning’s School in Westmoreland. Meet Director Rudy Robinson announced that this year the finals will be held at Herbert Morrison technical in Montego Bay as the Catherine Sports Complex has not been made available for staging the championship and that the schools had not budgeted to travel to STETHS (where the final is usually held if Catherine Hall is not available). Robinson also expressed disappointment at not being able to stage the championship at Catherine Hall.

This year the championship will run over three days – February 16, 18 and 20. The 16th will see the girls taking to the track at William Knibb High School in Trelawny, while the boys will be on track on the 18th at Herbert Morrison Technical for their eliminations. The final will be held on Saturday February 20 at Herbert Morrison. Competition begins at 9 am each day.

Robinson indicated that there will be two new schools this year. They are Merlene Ottey High from Hanover and Louville High in the parish of St. Elizabeth. Overall, thirty-nine schools will compete this year’s MILO Western Champs, broken down into twenty-five boys schools and eighteen girls schools including the two new ones.

The coaches (Neil Harrison and Milton Brown respectively) of the defending champions, Munro for boys and St. Elizabeth Technical for girls vowed to maintain their hold on the championships that they won last year at the finals which was played at STETHS.

Mrs. Suzanne Wilson-Wong, Consumer Marketing Manager at Nestle with responsibility for MILO, announced that this year’s sponsorship package had been increased as in all the previous years although not giving the actual amount. She further outlined that the total sponsorship included a cash payment in addition to providing funds to cover purchase of medals and trophies, as well as product and promotional support for the event.

She reiterated MILO’s support for the development meet and promised to continue to help it to grow to become better and better and for the West to continue to champion its place in the athletic arena in Jamaica and the world by the many world class athletes that it produces which according the meet director amounts to more than 50% of the medals won at the Olympics and World Championships.

Mrs. Wilson-Wong also announced that MILO will again sponsor the Nutrition and Lifestyle Clinic which targeted towards educating the young athletes and their coaches about the benefits of good nutrition to improved sports performance. The clinic got underway immediately following the launch of the championships.
