Paradise in darkness

Worrell King promoter of Western Consciousness (Right)

by: Adrian Frater, News Editor, Jamaica Gleaner Western Bureau:

For those who missed the late cancellation notice, which was aired on radio and television, it was a case of “paradise in darkness” last Saturday night when they turned up at Paradise Park in Savanna-la-Mar, Westmoreland, for the 22nd staging of the popular one-night show, Western Consciousness.

“I don’t know what is happening. I don’t see anybody and I don’t hear any music,” an elderly Rastafarian, who was standing by the locked gate to the property, told The Gleaner. “This is rather strange because up until late this afternoon the show was being advertised on the radio.”

When promoter Worrell King was contacted by telephone to explain the situation at Paradise Park, he stated that because of the heavy rains, which had pelted Westmoreland late in the afternoon, the venue had become waterlogged and unsuitable and it was decided to call off the show. Reggae Sumfest moves ahead despite challenges

Kingston, Jamaica: The promoters of Reggae Sumfest, Summerfest Promotions have indicated that despite the challenges facing the event, the annual Festival will take place on July 18-24 at Catherine Hall, St James. The organizers are also appealing to stakeholders to work with them in finding creative solutions to the challenges to stage the 18th edition of the Greatest Reggae Festival on Earth.

Johnny Gourzong, Executive producer of the Festival cites reduced sponsor support and increased production and artiste fees as some of the challenges being faced. He said, “Reggae Sumfest is important to Jamaica’s tourism and impacts positively on the economy and despite reduced sponsorship, we decided it was important to beat the odds and host the Festival this year.”

Traditionally Reggae Sumfest has hosted a mixture of local and international acts that has distinguished the event as an eclectic mix of good music and performers. In light of the fiscal challenges organizers gave great consideration to omitting International Acts for this year’s Festival. Stakeholders agreed that International Acts should be included on this year’s lineup as the Mix of genre and cultures is the essence of the event and such a cut back would adversely affect the marketability of the show. Comedy Central considers series about Jesus Christ

NEW YORK (AP) — Having already caused a fuss this spring with the depiction of the prophet Muhammad on South Park, Comedy Central said Thursday that it has a cartoon series about Jesus Christ in the works.

JC is one of 23 potential series the network said it has in development. It depicts Christ as a “regular guy” who moves to New York to “escape his father’s enormous shadow”.

His father is presented as an apathetic man who would rather play video games than listen to his son talk about his new life, according to Comedy Central’s thumbnail sketch of the idea. Reveille, the production company behind The Office, Ugly Betty and The Biggest Loser, is making JC.

It wouldn’t be the first time Jesus Christ has been on a Comedy Central cartoon; he’s a recurring character on the long-running South Park.

Comedy Central was the target last month of an Internet threat for a South Park episode that supposedly showed Islam’s prophet in a bear costume.

Whenever South Park features Muhammad in an episode, Comedy Central obscures the character with a black box; Muslims consider any physical representation of their prophet to be blasphemous. Following the Internet threat, Comedy Central angered South Park producers by editing out a character’s speech about intimidation in a subsequent episode. Read the rest of this entry »
